Interview with Artist Marina Muun
I was really happy to get the chance to interview soon to be UK-based artist and illustrator Marina Munn. Check it out!
Tell us about your artistic process. It’s hard to say because it’s constantly changing. I try to introduce something new that I’ve learned whenever I can in every new piece while still trying to preserve some sort of balanced technique. I started out working with traditional mediums (acrylic paintings and b/w pencil drawings mostly ) and did that for a very long time and now I’m trying to adapt my work to the digital medium. It hasn’t always been easy but it has been a lot of fun and I really enjoy the freedom that working digitally allows for.
How I usually work now: When a vague idea forms in my head, I make a really scruffy quick sketch in my sketchbook, then I scan it in, and draw it properly and develop it from there. I use both Photoshop and Illustrator. It usually ends up looking nothing like the original. I almost always start out with a hand-drawn image though. I still have a slight split personality feeling, I’m always torn between painting with
acrylics and drawing digitally.
Who are your favorite artists? Andy Goldsworthy, Katie Scott, Vladimir and Mark Rowney are among many whose work I enjoy.
What inspires you? All kinds of remnants of books and films, people, places or situations in my memory – and it’s not so much ideas that I get from these things as the feeling or mood that I then try to interpret in my own visual language, like a reflection of my subconscious. Maybe its because they take me out of my own world and that makes it easier to lose this solid connection with reality and be more creative… I don’t know, I don’t really think about that. Different cultures , supernatural events and nature also factor into my work. I look at many scientific illustrations in my spare time, I like dreaming about living in some remote area some day, untouched by humans, with a microscope and a telescope for companions. I think if I wasn’t an artist I’d like to be a scientist.
What are you currently reading/watching? Currently reading: The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. Currently watching: I like watching documentaries while I’m working.
Thank you Marina!
