Nash Bellows is a northern California-based artist whose brightly colored figurative work explores the theme of identity.  She works primarily with print making and drawing, however recently she’s also been making collages, paintings and even three dimensional installations. Tell us about your artistic process.

Typically for large paintings, I collect or take photos to make a loose compositional draft on Photoshop. After that, it’s mostly intuition as far as color and style go; but for smaller projects, I just go for it.

Tell us about the concepts, ideas or stories behind your work.

All of my work has to deal with identity and the aspects of identity, which I deem overwhelming. Right now I’m focusing more on the identity of others; trying to create a portrait of a person with their personal material goods.

What is your background in art?

I just finished my Bachelors of Fine Arts at Sonoma State University, but I had started out as an English major. Before that, I hadn’t taken any classes but my mom and I used to craft all the time. At the moment, I’m looking to apply to some artist residencies.

What are you currently reading/watching listening to? Right now I’m reading Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides and a collection of short stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The last few movies I’ve watched are Soylent Green, Heathers and The Virgin Suicides. And lately I’ve mostly been listening to Of Monsters and Men.
